Three weeks had gone by and I was still telling Nique, Lucy, and my parents we were visiting Jamir’s cousin. My mom was started to get concerned, so I needed to tell everyone about the move. As my mom called my phone, I stared at the phone.

“Just do it, Whisper, just do it.”

I grabbed my phone, but I dropped it back on the bed. Once again, I was chickening out. I needed to get it over with. I grabbed my phone again and dialed my mom’s number.

On the second ring she answered the phone, saying, “Whisper, I’ve been calling you!”

“I’m sorry, Mom. I was sleeping and my phone fell under the bed.” I pretended to yawn, but I got out of the bed and stretched.

Thanks to Ava, my body was tight and tense. Ava slept terrible and under me. I could barely get a good night’s sleep sometimes.

“When are you coming home? Your father and I miss you and Ava.”

“We’re not,” I said in a low tone.

“WHAT, ARE YOU SERIOUS? WHISPER YOU BETTER NOT BE SERIOUS!”

“Mom, calm down, it’s not that serious. Houston is a great city and there are soo many opportunities here. This would be a great start for me and reenrolling into a cosmetology.”

“Whisper, that sounds nice, but how do you make a decision like that without talking to your father and me? You have a daughter, you can’t just up and leave like that.”

“Mom, I know I have a daughter. She is the reason why I’m doing all of this, ALL of this! If you haven’t noticed it, I am an adult now and I can make my own decisions. This is only a temporary move, so calm down.”

“You’re right sweetheart, you are an adult and you can make your own decisions. I can’t think straight right now, I’ll call you later.”

I could hear my mom crying as she disconnected the call. I had a strong feeling that the relationship we were establishing would soon go down the drain.

Jamir walked into the room and rushed to grab my phone. I tried to grab it first, but he was too fast.

“Who were you on the phone with?” Jamir asked.

“I was on the phone with my mom!”

“Stop lying.”

“Check my phone, Jamir, since you think I’m lying.”

Jamir scrolled through my phone, then awkwardly laughed. I knew he felt stupid when he saw he last person I called was my mom.

He tossed my phone on the bed and said, “I was just joking.”

“Sure you were, Jamir, sure you were.”

“Did you tell your mom this is your new home?”

“Yes, and she’s very upset. Just when I thought our relationship was getting good.”

“I’m not the reason why y’all didn’t have a good relationship.”

“Okay, Jamir, I’m hungry.” I rubbed my stomach.

“Damn, Whisper, you’re always hungry. Are you pregnant again?” Jamir smiled and rubbed my stomach.

I removed his hand and said, “Hell no, I would go crazy.”

“Are you saying you don’t want to have any more kids with me?”

“I’m saying I don’t want any more kids, period! Ava is enough for me.
